In this post series dedicated to Sacred Aromatics (SA), we will be adapting traditional scent blends, including antique, ritual, shamanic, and healing formulations, for use in the present day, in modern spiritual practice and psychedelic therapy.
Originally, these recipes were used as incense or smudges: as offerings to gods, to accompany ingested psychoactive plant substances, to heal and protect, to deepen meditative states, and to make contact with spirits and ancestors. This is where natural scent may have its roots. And this is why we call the botanicals used for spiritual initiation Sacred Aromatics. They continue to play an important role in many indigenous cultures.
You can use botanicals either as smudges or incense (where possible and with proper ventilation during and after each session), or simply enjoy the aromatic essences they yield. Essential oils or CO₂ extracts are more suitable for diffusion. For topical applications, you may also include absolutes, though some can be quite thick and viscous, so we recommend consulting your supplier regarding the handling of specific materials. Fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil is recommended as a base for perfume and anointing oils (5-20% blends). Alternatively, you can create natural perfumes using an alcohol base.
Below you will find introductory posts to Sacred Aromatics, Incense, and Smudging.
Application & Benefits
Spiritual Practice
The SA blends can be combined with spiritual & psychic practices, reflexology, acupressure, yoga, breathwork, dreamwork, mindfulness & meditation, reiki, creative & intuitive practices, and many other activities or physical exercises involving self-study and/or mind-body connection.
Sacred Journeys
They can also be used for sacred journeys with plant-based therapeutic and transformative psychedelics to support your set and setting before and during a session. They help relax the body and mind for a smoother, more easeful experience, while fostering emotional openness and receptivity. Post-session, they support integration, deepening insights and facilitating continued self-reflection and processing. Test and adapt the blend to your olfactory preferences a few times before the journey to ensure it is pleasant to your nose. For psychedelic therapy, keep formulations simple and familiar, as complex blends may become overwhelming during altered states.
Safety Note: Avoid smoke-based preparations during altered states, pregnancy, respiratory conditions, or in enclosed spaces. Essential oils are generally a safer alternative for ceremonial work, provided they are properly diluted and used mindfully.
